The Root folder Last updated: 23. Oct 2026
Place default files and folders for your site here. #/Root/ mirrors the URL tree of the published site: #/Root/assets/site.css is served at /assets/site.css unless the site has its own file at that path.
What it is
Files placed in #/Root/ are served as if they were in the published site itself. A file at #/Root/style.css is reachable as /style.css, and #/Root/assets/css/theme.css as /assets/css/theme.css. A real file at the same path always wins.
Use this folder for assets and pages that should live at the root of your domain — favicons, robots.txt, shared stylesheets, JavaScript bundles, the home page.
Common use cases
Site-wide assets —
#/Root/style.css,#/Root/main.js, images and fontsConventional files —
#/Root/favicon.ico,#/Root/robots.txt,#/Root/sitemap.xmlHome page —
#/Root/index.hashis served at/Custom 404 page —
#/Root/404.hash. Docly looks for404.html,#/404.hash,#/404.html,#/Root/404.hashand#/Root/404.html, in that order. There is no custom page for other status codes.
Resolution order
#/Root/ is a fallback for every path, not just the top level. When Docly receives a request, it looks in this order:
The document or folder at the requested path.
#/Root/<the whole path>— or#/Root/<path>/Indexwhen the path is a folder.#/Root/mirrors the whole URL tree, not just the top level.#/Folder/<file name>— only the last part of the path. For a request for a folder, Docly looks for#/Folder/Index. This step needs the folder in the path to exist.
If the publication uses an app, files in the app's # folder are found the same way, behind the publication's own. See The Folder folder for the per-folder fallback.
An app sits behind the publication's own # folder, and its root is #. A path written as #/site.json therefore means site.json in the template's root — never a # subfolder inside it. See Do not create a # folder inside an app.
Example
A minimal #/Root/index.hash that acts as the site's home page:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>My workspace</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="/style.css">
</head>
<body>
<h1>Welcome</h1>
<p>This page is served from #/Root/index.hash.</p>
</body>
</html> Other root-level files referenced in this template (/style.css) are resolved from #/Root/style.css automatically. See Site.json config file for URL rules, HTTP headers and minification settings.
